Danbooru (段ボール) is the Japanese word for "cardboard box" and it was the very first booru. It was coded and admined by rq. The site got more and more popular due to rq's lenient policy on mature content, until eventually the site couln't take the strain anymore and pulled the plug. [1]

The popularity and the idea of danbooru though made many new boorus appear around the net. You can find the new revived Danbooru here.
